Anyone know what ircd is?

Anyone have any idea what ircd is and how it gets started?? It appears in my netstat and I don't know why!   Also, does anyone have a complete list of TCP and UDP ports loggings for portsentry? I see the default file doens't cover too many ports and doesn't appear to do ranges either.   Chris
