I think that this is part of COBRA interface (or whatever you call it),
specifically the ORB (Object Resource? Broker)part of it.
If that's what it is, then you can think of COBRA as a standard way of
using objects written in other languages (and on other machines) in your
programs.
Not accurate to any extent, but you get the idea.
