Actually there can be something proprietary -- namely the
authentication. Exchange can be configure to use POP and IMAP however
many organizations do not do so due to their inherent clear text
nature. Instead they use NTLM which is a native microsoft authentication
(the one that the Outlook client uses).

You do have options though:

If your exchange server is configured to use pop/imap: pine, netscape,
mutt, et. al can be used.

If you exchange server is configured to use imaps (imap + ssl) then you
are more limited, however I know that both netscape and mutt support this.

If you exchange server is configured to only accept ntlm, there are not
native mail readers under linux that I am aware of that support this
protocol.

However, there is fetchmail (http://www.fetchmail.org) which can be used
with any of the above configurations of your exchange server. Fetchmail
does just that, fetches the mail and delivers it locally on your machine
where you can then read it with your preferred mailreader under linux.

Personally I use fetchmail/procmail combination to fetch and filter email
from an exchange server and pine as my mail client. Work well and I
recommend the fetchmail/procmail combination highly.
