As long as you have the SCSI driver and hard drive support compiled into
your kernel, you don't need an initrd to boot.  And when you compile a
costum kernel, it makes sence to compile the drivers for your root
partation compiled into your kernel.  It may even make sence to have
your IDE drivers compiled as modules.  I have two systems like that.
One have an IDE CDROM, the other is all SCSI.
