Traceroute not tracing routes

When I run traceroute on my Red Hat 7.0 I get 1 * * * * 2 * * * * 3 * * * *   Now the catch it used to work, and my machines connected through this one using ipchains it works correctly.  I have removed traceroute and recompiled.  Checked to make sure I don't have something blocking the datagrams.  Can anyone think of anything else I might look for or do because I really need this ability.   Thank You.
