Hi Austin,

        the /var/catman directories are sort of like a cache for your man
pages.  Your man pages are in *roff format so theres a bit of work to be
done to make them readable.  Once the conversion is done it stashes a copy
in /var/catman for future use.  So ...
        /usr/man/man1/man.1.gz
.. becomes..
        /var/catman/cat1/man.1.gz

Having to write to /var/catman is acutally the reason why /usr/bin/man is
sgid man.

P.S. One of the things /etc/cron.daily/tmpwatch does is clean out the
/var/catman directories of old stuff.
