I'll give 2.4 a shot.  It'll take a while for this now 8MHz processor to
gulp down and decompress the 24MB tarball, though. :)

Have you thought about trying the latest and greatest kernel 2.4.0? I find
it
to be a lot "smoother" than the 2.2.x series, and it has a kernel compile
option
for allowing more verbose scsi reporting to standard output.
