A very basic rule is that if a service is running,you can always telnet to that
port and it will come out with some kind of response.Maybe nor
comprehensible,but,you can know if the service is running on that port.
For eg."telnet localhost 80" [localhost can be replaced by ip address too.]
will give a response like:
Trying localhost..
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'
Something similar can be obtained by doing a telnet to say port 25 for sendmail
service.The response is something like:
Trying 10.1.20.22...
Connected to 10.1.20.22.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 mail_domain_name ESMTP Sendmail 8.9.3/8.8.7; Thu, 18 Jan 2001 09:11:4
3 -0500
Where 10.1.20.22 is the ip address of the m/c running sendmail.
This is true for all services.
