 That's the one I upgraded, so got that one now. But why did things stop

 /etc/pam.d/ftp is the same as yours, the original.

 Divide and conquer. Right. Of course this works. Why didn't I think of that 
little step before. By the way, I can see my boss checking on me. He just 
tried to connect from his home machine. Well, next time he'll have more luck, 
but end up in a different directory than he suspects :-).

 Any suggestions how to get these bloody virtual servers back on line? And why 
the hell did this stop working just when I did the upgrade?? (Scuze my 
language).
 Thanks a lot anyway, and if you have some suggestions about these virtual 
servers I will thank you even more :-).
