My guess would be to look for possible corruption of the /etc/inittab file
itself, and perhaps even the 'login' binary.  I believe when you log in
from runlevel 5 the authentication is carried out by gdm/kdm/xdm and not
login.

$ls -l /bin/login

$rpm -V util-linux
