Non read-only, as in what? The partitions? All the boot disk does is load
the kernel from itself, mount stuff from /etc/fstab, and then start the
system normally.

If you're talking one of those mkbootdisk ones, they're rescue disks,
moreso... or something. I just write the kernel image straight to the
floppy device with dd.

Then there's the read-only image section option from lilo.conf (the one
from the bootdisk in this case). That makes the image itself read-only I
think... don't touch that one.

Is there a 4th? <shrug>
