He said bzip2, not gzip :)

tar cvf tarfilename.tar stuff_you_want_in_the_archive
bzip2 -cv tarfilename.tar

man tar
man bzip2

:)

Wildcards are ok with tar for the list at the end. You can specify a
directory and it'll recurse automatically... it's all in the man pages.
