Randy,
I think you'll have one of these friendly Linux servers in your
neighbourhood where you can get a new slocate.rpm (*if* there are fresher
ones than the one you seem to have ...) ... if I remember it correctly
they have on www.redhat.com a link to Linux servers where it (normally) is
possible to download the goodies you need.

As to installing source rpm's, that's rather simple, even for a Newbie
like I am: I get the src.rpm that I need, then doing this:

(The following lines in the box wrote (IIRC) Thomas Ribbrock here on the
list: where is this guy ... I don't remember hearing from him a long time
... hoping everything's OK with you, Thomas .... :)

In many cases you can simply run the command
rpm --rebuild APPLICATION.src.rpm
to compile the SRPM into an RPM - you don't even have to know much about
compiling. If all goes well, you'll end up with a brandnew
APPLICATION.i386.rpm in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386, which you can then
install the normal way.
