If you're downloading the ful linux-2.4.2.tar.gz file, you shouldn't need
the 2.4.2-patch file.  The patch archives are usually used to bring
earlier versions up to the latest version, for compiling...like if you
have the source tree for 2.4.0, and want to go to 2.4.2 without
downloading the whole thing.

Personally, though, I just download the whole thing each time.
