PGP is a software package utilizing public-key encryption that offers
several encryption services, most especially file and drive encryption.
It has close integration with numerous E-mail MUAs, making it relatively
easy to use. There are several public key servers to provide secure
repositories of published keys. (In a public-key system, each individual
entity has two keys, a public and a private one. The recipient's public
key is needed to encrypt a message or file for any given recipient;
thus, the need for some way to get that person's public key and still
know it is, in fact, the uncorrupted and correct key.)
Do you need it? Only you can answer that question. Do you ever send
E-mail that you'd prefer not to be the equivalent of a post card in the
US Mail? Do you have data on your computer you'd prefer to be securely
encrypted?
Cheers,
