Connection refused to X server

I must have screwed something up today.  When I su to root and try to execute a 
program (red-carpet), I get the following:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server

Any idea what might be causing this, or better yet, how to fix it?
