OK, the cluebat has been properly administered.  This resolved THAT
particular issue.  I'll read as much as I can, then probably come back with
an IPTables question regarding:

iptables v1.2.1a: can't initialize iptables table `filter': Module is wrong
version
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

even though IPTables is compiled into the kernel.  I've installed
iptables-1.2.1a-1.  There appears to be a closed bug report on this one.  I
have to do some more reasearch.
