Do you have any UNIX experience?  You might want to get familiar with
general UNIX concepts first.  Running Linux by Welsh and Kaufman
(O'Reilly press) is a good intro to Linux.  If you want to learn
programming, I would recommend learning C first.  I like Practical C
Programming by Oualline (O'Reilly).  I also recommend
