Hello,
Well, after my hardware debacle, I am linux-less for a
while, until I get a house bought up here and get my
computers moved in and set up again. So in the meantime, I
figure I have a good time to ask some of the questions that
I have been wondering about but have been too busy to ask.
First and foremost, is there a decent way to 'strip' RedHat
down to the bare minimum? There are a variety of reasons
to do so, from installing on minimal hardware i.e. a 486
for firewall or home control projects, security i.e.
minimize un-necessary files, or perhaps somepeople are just
control freaks and like to dictate exactly which packages
get installed on their boxen.
I've done the installs where you go in and unselect most of
the things like 'GNOME', 'Publishing', etc. Even w/ a tour
thru the 'Select Individual Packages' and de-selecting
other stuff, followed by some quality time w/ the man page
for RPM and the CLI only seems to get me down to about
230MB or so, give or take. By comparison, SuSE 6.4 (last
one I used a lot) had an option in yast for a minimal
configuration that was ~140MB, and I think the base install
for Debian is considerably less. Though in all honesty,
the minimum install of Debian is just downright painful to
use, at least for me. Nvi just doesn't cut the mustard
compared to vim-enhanced!! ;)
I guess what I'm kind of interested in could be one of two
things: a) an installation class, or b) a post-install
script. I've not messed w/ Wolverine yet, anyone whose
used it know if it provides something like this? As far
as the other, I've never heard of anything 'intelligent'
enough to deal w/ the package dependencies of rpms other
than yast, and that's limited to original SuSE rpms.
Any advice, opinions, or otherwise is appreciated.
TIA,
Monte
