Is this a 7.2 (Enigma) system? I believe kernel 2.4.7-10 is the kernel 
that shipped with 7.2. There are updates available for many packages, 
including the kernel.

The updates will probably fix the cdrom problem. In the meantime,
As 'root' run:

depmod -ae
modprobe ide-cd

That should also fix the problem.
