Sarig,

Make sure you have "ONBOOT=yes" in
"/etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg"

For the serial ports, the easiest thing to do is use the program
"minicom." Type the command, "minicom -s" and choose the serial port
configuration from the menu. If it says the device is "/dev/modem,"
you will have to make sure you have a symlink to /dev/ttyS0 from
/dev/modem. Or you can just change the device to /dev/ttyS0. That's
for "com-1" in dos-talk.
"com-1" = /dev/ttyS0
"com-2" = /dev/ttyS1
and so forth.

If that doesn't work, look in the bios and see if the serial ports are
enabled or not.

Regards,
Gregg

After having been hacked I am slowly making progress on setting up a
firewall for my home network. I just finished installing Redhat 7.2 on my
firewall system, which is an old 486 100mhz machine, and I have successfully
gotten it to recognize my network card. When I use the ifconfig eth0 .... I
can see and use the interface successfully. However, when I restart the
machine the system does not initialize the network card on its own like the
workstation system does. I went through the same basic steps as I did in
Redhat 7.0 but everytime I start the system I have to type in the ifconfig
command again to get the eth0 interface up and running. Any ideas on how I
can get the system to initialize the interface automatically?

The other thing I would like to do is get the modem recognized which will be
the outbound side of the firewall. Since the boot up checking for new
hardware (kudzu I think?) is not recognizing the modem I though I would
start debuggin by insuring that the serial port it is connected to is
recognized by the operating system. Could somebody give me a hint as to how
I might be able to check the system to see what serial ports it is aware of?

Thanks in advance.
