I posted a message a few days ago because rxvt suddenly wouldn't open any more. Xterm worked fine, but rxvt would say that it couldn't obtain control of the tty. (An older version of rxvt simply hung.)
I thought I'd post the solution in case anyone else ever has the same problem. /dev/tty had 644 permissions when it is supposed to have 666. I don't know how the permissions got changed, but it was a pretty simple problem to fix.
