I've been running RHL6.0 on a 486DX100, 32MB machine for over a year. It's
my firewall, connecting my internal network to my ADSL provider. Over the
past couple of months, I've been getting traffic slowdowns.

Normally, when I ping the provider's POP server by IP address, it says
response time is 36ms. No problem; e-mail and surfing are snappy.

During a slowdown, ping response time is 1036ms, 2036ms, and even 5035 and
6035ms. Interesting that the last two digits are always consistent. As well,
it doesn't take 6 seconds for each response. A few packets disappear, but
then they appear at a consistent speed on the console.

To fix this, I use /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifdown and .../ifup to
restart the Ethernet device. Then, I flush and re-apply my 'ipchains' rules.

As noted, the machine is a low-power box. There are two network interfaces,
a 3C509 (for the ADSL side)and a NE2000 clone (for the LAN interface). The
ADSL interface uses the 'pump' client to get an IP address from the
provider's DHCP server. The LAN interface uses a static IP address. I've
added the 'ip_masq_ftp' module. Other than that, no updates have been
applied.

Any ideas? I'd re-install from scratch if I knew it would help. I'd install
the Enigma (7.2) distribution if I knew that it would run on a 486. Can
anyone confirm or deny that?
