Ok. I've got one of my desktops busy munching on my CD collection using
RipEnc, which threatens to overflow my little 3.2GB hard drive, since I
backed up my /home directory off the server while I rebuild it. I've
mounted some spare space on another machine via NFS in the meantime for a
~/music directory to keep things from over flowing, but in the meantime, I
want to see if I can get a nice new kernel running w/ LVM on my little LAN
server and get everything back on there where it belongs!!

I've got the latest stable (2.4.17) kernel source downloading, should be
done by tomorrow or so (dialup connection, gotta love it :P ). D/l'd the
latest rev of lvm from sistina.com, 1.03 or so. Browsing thru the LVM
HOWTO (little old, May 2000??) from the LDP, good stuff. I've got another
book here, Red Hat Linux Security & Optimization, that has what looks to
be a good chapter on building LVM stuff (guess we'll see if it is more
correct than the iptables section!!)

I guess the burning question in my mind right now, since I'm still getting
all the pieces together, is this: Do LVM and ext3 play well together? I
know SuSE has been supporting LVM and ReiserFS for a while now, and the
book I have is from around RedHat 7.0 / kernel 2.4.0 or so, and as such
only discusses resizing reiserfs partitions on LVM, not ext3 per se. I
really kind of need ext3 (or rather, can *not* use ReiserFS) for this
machine, as the mail client I use is sylpheed, which stores each message
as a separate file ala MH, IIRC. ReiserFS does not do well w/ this type
of scenario, as it literally seems to take 2-3 times as long to open a
folder or to scan the folder trees on ReiserFS as on ext3. So ReiserFS is
out.

Thanks in advance,

Monte
