Of course not. That would be Very Bad. (Consider: the files reappear after
unmount - what would be in them if the OS freed their storage?)

Generally with a mountpoint you either:

        - Store NOTHING underneath it, for the obvious reason.
          that most of the time it will be inaccessible.
          This effectively avoids your "wasted space" scenario.

        - Store a skeleton (i.e. minimalist) tree underneath it
          as David described, containing sufficient to get by in the
          (usually rare) case that the main filesystem isn't mounted.
