you can get oracle/linux to download for free. there's some things to read
about install (setting language, glibc patch...)

postgresql is quite close to oracle (same features i mean) and you could
learn a lot with it, even on a small-sized machine, standard rpms exist.
it's a very complete product.

mysql is much "simplier" than the others above, it lacks power features to
compare to oracle. conversly, it's nice and fast for simple applications
(even with a lot of data)

so my suggestion would be : try and enjoy postgresql. don't forget to have
a look to relative products like phppgadmin
