I'm trying to figure out how to make java applets look better. I'm using
Sun's JRE (1.3.1) and Mozilla. A good test case is Yahoo's crossword
puzzle at http://games.yahoo.com/games/login?game=Crossword. If you open a
puzzle in linux the font looks pretty crappy while it looks pretty nice in
windows. There is a file /usr/java/jre1.3.1_02/lib/font.properties that
seems like it would control the java fonts but I haven't been able to get
the font to change for the life of me. Anyone know how to get java to use
a better font?

Gordon,

ICBW, but it sounds like the font being used isn't scaling correctly. You
can
alias a font to any other font to fix the problem. Check out the Font
De-uglification (their word) HOWTO at http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/FDU
and look at section 3.3: The fonts.alias File.

Good luck!

Brian
