Gordon, ICBW, but it sounds like the font being used isn't scaling correctly. You can alias a font to any other font to fix the problem. Check out the Font De-uglification (their word) HOWTO at http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/FDU and look at section 3.3: The fonts.alias File. Good luck!
