gdm is probably having a problem resolving your hostname. If you only have 
a dialup interface, make sure your hosts file includes this:

127.0.0.1    myhostname  localhost   localhost.localdomain

If you have a static IP address, then assign your real hostname to the 
static IP address:

127.0.0.1    localhost               localhost.localdomain
192.168.1.1  myhostname.localdomain  myhostname


If you don't have an entry in /etc/hosts for your machine, and you don't
have DNS available, then some network programs (like gdm) will not be able
to resolve the hostname
