I had quite a battle with sane before I got my Nikon Coolscan working
under Red Hat 7.2.  Then I found out about VueScan
http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html.  It's just a binary executable, so
there's no installation procedure.  It works great.  It costs $40, but
it's worth it.  Good luck.
