Hello,
after browsing the mail archive of this list I came to
conclusion that nobody seems to suffer from same problem in compiling
kernel-2.4.9.-21, the original kernel shipped by RH 7.2.
Here is what happened till now:
I aimed to recompile sound modules and therefore recompiling the whole
kernel on RH 7.2, AMD, K7VZA main board, all necessary packages seem to
be
installed (kernel, headers, sources of 2.4.9-21, make, glibc )
After finishing menuconfig, I started:
1. make dep, clean, modules, modules_install, bzImage
At the end of this compilation these messages are given:
------------------------ snip -------------------------
In file included from paep.c:69:
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h:1:2: #error modules should never use
kernel-headers system
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h:2:2 #error but rather headers from an
appropriate kernel-source package
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h:3:2 #error Change
-l/usr/src/linux/include(or similiar)to
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h:4:2 #error -l/lib/modules/$(uname
-r)/build/include
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h:5:2 #error to build against the
currently running kernel
make:*** [paep.o] error 1
make:*** [modsubdir_aep] error 2
make:*** [modsubdir_addon] error2
make:*** [_mod_drivers] error 2

Some questions:
1. /usr/src/ contains 2 directories: linux2.4 and linux2.4.9-21 Am I
wrong to compile against linux2.4?
2. Suprisingly /lib/modules/ contains a "linux2.4.9-21custom"
directory, because during reboot modprobe complains: can't open and
write to /lib/modules/2.4.9-21/modules.dep during boot process (file or
directory does not exist). Doing recompilation serveral times only the
lib/modules/linux2.4.9-21custom is created (without an
appropriate dependency file !!!)
After repeated trials (including a 'make mrproper') for serveral times I
am
stuck now, X 4.1.0 has gone, I only have acess to console, finally my
(after great struggle running TUXRACER fine) NVIDIA drivers seem to work
anymore :-((
For some reason I think it might be impossible that RH shipps kernels
with wrong modutils versions, isn't it? So I am lost in the dark,
please could someone shed some light to my delusion !?
thanks
Thomas
