ext2 and ext3 are very compatible. The difference on disk is that ext3 has some extra journal data that ext2 will ignore. The real difference is in the kernel that knows how to do the journaling. Once you have deleted the whole thing, these differences are completely trivial, use any ext2 tools that you can that help.
