for those of you interested, i solved my problem.  i mounted the nfs fs as 
v2, and it worked fine.  i guess nfs v3 in linux is either buggy, or has 
interoptability issues with other nfs v3 servers running on other os 
platforms.  i had to force the mount with a mount option of vers=2.
