One thing that you might need to do is change your resolution to the
projector's default resolution. Most of them will accept 800x600 these
days, so if you change to 800x600 ahead of time, that will probably give
you the best chance of trouble-free operation.

You should also try changing resolution on the fly using [Ctrl][Alt][+]
and [Ctrl][Alt][-]. It should cycle through the resolutions listed in
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
