depends on the IMAP server.

for uw-imapd (univercity of washington, authors of the wu-ftpd) -> YES, the
system has to be in  the system base.

For Cyrus Imapd - no. Sendmail and Cyrus might be integrated into a solution
similar to qmail + vpopmail -> virtual domains and users that have nothing
to do with the system base users.
