Sure, something could.  It could still be gconfd if you're using any
GNOME apps like Evolution.

Log out, switch to tty1, and run 'fuser -vm /home' to see all of the
files there open, and the programs holding them.  That program is the
cause of your problem.  You might have to do it a couple of times; in my
case, it's intermittent.  Let us know what you find.
