Hi everybody,

We have some problems with a new internal HP Surestore DAT 40 SCSI drive, installed onto a new HP Netserver tc4000 (they've come together, a couple of months ago).

We want to make some One-Button Disaster Recovery Tapes - or, at least some reliable backup tapes (i.e. we want to write something to the tapes and be able to safely read that data back).

The DDS4 (40 Gb) tape reaches too quick the end of tape (or, at least so it says). We have tried also with a DDS 3 tape, with same results.

We have tried cpio, tar, dump, TapeWare 6.3 with SP3A, taper, hostdump.sh, etc., with 0, 512, 2048, 5120 bytes/ 28kb block sizes.; all we get is either a premature: "end of tape reached. Insert new tape to continue ..." or "error. aborting, exiting, etc." Tapeware says "Error xxx. Illegal request." when trying to make a Backup Tape.

It seems we are unable to set the correct density and length of the tape (?!!)

Inserting the 40Gb tape, the "mt [-f /dev/st0] status" command gives:

SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x26 (DDS-4 or QIC-4GB).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (41010000):
BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN
Following, the output of four commands:

dmesg | grep st0
cat /etc/modules.conf
cat /proc/scsi/scsi
lsmod
