How about changing to another virtual console (ctl or alt F[1-8]), log in as
root, and then
type init 0 (halt) (or init 6 for reboot)? If no virtual console available
- I'll put a stop
feature in the script somehow or ssh if on a network.

Subject: Shutdown from initlevel 4

Hi - I've been playing with creating a script to create a kiosk setup for RH
6.2. Works pretty well, however I'm testing it by changing inittab to run at
level 4. Boots up and works fine...but how the heck do I shut it down from
initlevel 4 without thrashing the file system?

TIA,
Mike Wafkowski
