Not sure if this will help your issue, but I'm using spamassassin and
procmail here on an 8.0 system with no difficulty. The steps are a little
fuzzy, since I did this at about 3:30 AM today, but as I recall:
chkconfig spamassassin on
service spamassassin start

$ cat .procmailrc
SHELL=/bin/sh
LINEBUF=16384
DROPPRIVS=yes
LOGFILE=$HOME/procmail.log
ABYSS=/dev/null
VERBOSE=off
FORMAIL=/usr/bin/formail
SENDMAIL=/usr/sbin/sendmail

:0fw
| /usr/bin/spamc

:0:
* ^X-Spam-Status: Yes
$ABYSS

$ cat .fetchmailrc
set syslog
set postmaster "mfratoni"
set bouncemail
set no spambounce
set properties ""
set daemon 600
poll tuxfan.homeip.net with proto POP3
[snip login and password details]

Sendmail is using the default installed configuration.
