I've been working in the field for over 20 years, and in UNIX for almost a dozen years...and I will second what Ed said. "Automatic updates" are for folks at the knowledge level of yuor typical M$ user. XP, with its EULA, has just that...and with an autoupgrade, it can, and sooner or later *will*, break something critical, and you won't have a fast backout path. <snip > Simply put, you can not run a Red Hat server 24x7 - there will be change > windows when you have the opportunity to apply patches and do reboots. This isn't just a Red Hat issue, either, it's inherent in what is going on. This is true for *every* UNIX, and for every m/frame o/s as well. The SOP, in *all* shops, is to *schedule* maintenance downtime. Unless you have an odd business, you'll want to go for sunday night/monday morning, tuesday night/wednesday morning, or thursday night/friday morning (yes, I *did* skip wed. night/thurs morn), and probablly something like 0200-0430 hours (or till 0600 hours, if you need more time) on those mornings. mark ---------- Mark Roth Unix/Linux systems administrator & software developer HUSO Support, a division of Prometheus Unbound: affordable Linux technical support and training for the home user and small business.
