We've been attempting to set up a new server box with RH8. Right after
a fresh install the KDE desktop starts up fine.

After adding and configuring a few other applications, a startx command
hangs. All we get is the blue desktop and the Redhat icon tray (the small
"splash screen"-type window in the center of the screen that shows load
progress... don't know what the official name is). Normally, the icons
appear along the bottom of the window as KDE loads but in our case no
icons appear and after a while we have to just kill the session.

The only post-install configuration we have done is that we've added
some users and a few applications including postgres, mysql, apache,
majordomo; all non-X applications. The installs were done remotely thru
SSH so I have no idea at what point the X-Windows stopped working. We've
stopped the daemons for the added applications to see if we might have
been out of memory or some other conflict, but that didn't help.

We normally wouldn't care about X on a server, but so many of the
configuration programs are X-based that it's becoming a necessity.

This has happened twice. The first time we encountered the problem, we
reformatted and reinstalled RH8 then began the configuration again but the
result was the same.

Any suggestions about where to look would be appreciated?
