oops forgot to mention the symlinking and all the good stuff.  do this
before you set up the conduits if it's not already too late.

# Find your port by hitting the HotSync button on your cradle and then
checking 'dmesg' output.
# Create the '/dev/pilot' device:
  serial: ln -s /dev/ttyS# /dev/pilot
  usb: ln -s /dev/usb/ttyUSB# /dev/pilot
# As root, change the permissions to whatever device you linked /dev/pilot
to in the last step:
  chown 'user' /dev/?????
  chgrp 'group' /dev/?????
  chmod ug+rw /dev/?????
# With 'pilot-xfer' and 'J-Pilot' start the HotSync from your PDA before
engaging the application's sync features. (/dev/pilot needs to be active).
With gpilotd (used with evolution) you can just hit the sync button.
