Are you trying to boot in graphical mode (run-level 5) or text mode
(run-level 3)? In case of the former, the reason for the error can
be that your X server keeps crashing due to misconfiguration or
driver problems. 

Temporarily you might want to boot into text mode and try starting X
manually with the "startx" command. You can change the default
run-level in /etc/inittab (the "initdefault" line) or via your boot
loader (add the argument 3 to the kernel parameters).

However, it can also be damaged system files.
