Somethings are compiled for large file support. Try ftp/gftp on it, for example.

I have been struggling to get large file support in RH 8.0.

It seems to me that everything I try to do fails due to there being no
large file support compiled into the utilities that come with the OS -
eg ftpd, gftp, cp, rcp bla bla.

That's odd. I'm still running Red Hat Linux 7.1 with an ext2 file
system and I have no problems with large files. I just created a 4.3GB
file and used cp to copy it. No problems at all.
