Hi, I have just started to wrestle with the same problem, and have come to the conclusion that I need to turn the DSL device from a router into a bridge. And then run pppoe on the Linux box (because the ISP insists on using pppoe, even thought it is allocating a static IP.)
I don't want to think about bridging the kernel, because the dsl router does dchp that I cannot see how to disable. Firewalling kernel-bridged traffic is apparently feasible, with patches, but unlikely to be a good option. There seem to be other potential problems to do with your dsl gear, if it uses pppoe, and whether you can control the MTU. If you can't, then VPN traffic can get difficult, or in some cases impossible.
