Observations about the RH ftp server:
1) Slower than a snail. Doing a simple cd takes a minute to perform:
ncftp / > cd pub/redhat/linux/7.1
2) Getting a directory listing from a large directory always times out:
ncftp ...en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS > dir perl*
Data connection timed out.
List failed.
At this point I might as well close the connection because:
[next attempt hangs ncftp]
The server has been like this for quite a while now.
