Several of you folks have been very helpful with my dilemma, namely not being able to use passwd. I have fixed the problem by forcing an install of the old samba packages. It seems the new versions that I installed last week using up2date have some sort of bad interaction with the passwd stuff. The old packages work fine.
This seems like something Red Hat might be interested in.
