Well, it would appear from the error message that you are still using "names" 
and that DNS is saying "I don't know who x.x.com is."  Try this test:
Open up Outlook Express and set the incoming and outgoing servers (pop and 
smtp) to the IP address of the server in question, as opposed to it's name. 
Then get on the linux server and make sure you have a user there and login as 
root. Use Pine (if installed) or any console email client to open and compose 
a message to your test user. Send it and then login with your Outlook Express 
and see if you have mail. Once this is done, you'll see if Pop is working.  
Furthermore, I'd setup sendmail to send all outbound mail to your ISP's SMTP 
server. This will help places like AOL receive your mail, since they reverse-
lookup SMTP servers and that requires a) an SMTP server with a static IP and 
b) one with an MX record. Your ISP's SMTP server should relay for you fine 
since your connection is within their domain.  Let me know if I can help
