Aren't all SCSI tape devices supported my the st driver?

As long as the SCSI adapter driver is seeing the drive, you should be okay.

When you run dmesg (or view /var/log/dmesg), do you see the following
somewhere in the middle (2.4.18-18.7.x kernel):

scsi0 : Adaptec AIC7XXX EISA/VLB/PCI SCSI HBA DRIVER, Rev 6.2.8
~ <Adaptec aic7899 Ultra160 SCSI adapter>
~ aic7899: Ultra160 Wide Channel B, SCSI Id=7, 32/253 SCBs

blk: queue c4634818, I/O limit 4095Mb (mask 0xffffffff)
~ Vendor: ARCHIVE Model: Python 06408-XXX Rev: 8160
~ Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 03

(Your SCSI device may vary, but you should see the detection)

And then near the very end:

st: Version 20020205, bufsize 32768, wrt 30720, max init. bufs 4, s/g
segs 16
Attached scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 6, lun 0

These came from one of a Dell PowerEdge 2550 running Red Hat 7.2, While
your SCSI params will vary, this is a Python type drive (DDS-4).

If you don't see anything remotely like that, then there's probably an
issue where Red Hat or your hardware isn't seeing the drive.
