I am having an issue with Sendmail (Version 8.12.6) throttling connections. It is running on a Dell 2550 Server with RH8.0. Sendmail is running fine, but from time to time we have large bursts of traffic to student mailing lists on campus (Up to 6000 Students). When these bursts occur, Sendmail throttles and sometimes dies. I am coming from a FreeBSD background and initially had similar problems with Sendmail running on it. The solution with FreeBSD was to modify the kernel, from the default 32 "MAXUSERS", to 256 "MAXUSERS". This modification allowed Sendmail to spawn enough processed to accommodate the high mail rate without choking. My Sendmail configuration is pretty much default with no throttling or max child processes set. With this in mind, it seems the issue is with the default OS/Kernel settings and not with Sendmail itself. Does anyone have any advice on how I can accommodate these bursts of email traffic?

Thanks
