Sound module errors from modprobe when no sound card is installed

This is a problem we've had since as far as I can remember:

When running Red Hat Linux on a machine that doesn't have a sound card, the system log fills up with messages like:

Dec 20 16:02:29 hai modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-0
Dec 20 16:02:29 hai modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-3

(Continually; not just during boot.)

Why? Any way to prevent this?
